徐州彭城人，字德润。后唐明宗天成进士。后周太祖显德初拜右谏议大夫，迁右詹事。性刚毅不挠，素与宰相范质不协，常郁郁不得志，遂退居洛阳，以书史自娱。太祖开宝中召赴京师，以老病求退，授秘书监致仕。
